Note: Aunt Ruby remembers visiting her Grandmother Hankins many times near Crews, Ala. The house was not large but nice and cozy. The kitchen was a 20' X 20' log room with logs about 12" to 18" wide. The logs and floor were scrubbed white. Another room which was clapboard and sealed inside had the fireplace and was also 20' x 20’. This room had two spindle beds and a small 3/4 bed where Grandpa Hankins slept. He had rheumatism and was crippled. He would lean his chair back on two legs and walk it across the floor to the fireplace. The beds had slats of rope and were high off the floor. when they visited, Aunt Ruby and Ruth had to get a ladder or chair to get up on the beds. They remember the beds as being beautiful, but later a family member burned them for wood after he acquired the place.

Aunt Ruth remembers Grandma Hankins' table as having a drawer underneath in the center. When they would visit, the drawer would have ham and biscuits and sponge cake for them to get for themselves.

Hankins, Sarah {I0173} (b. , d. ?)
Note: George Sullivan, a Negro man, who worked for Aunt Ruby, told her that he had been born on her Grandfather Hankin's place. He said Joel Hankins had gone off to the Civil War and George's family was left on the place. When Joel returned from the war, George's father was told by Joel Hankins that they were free to go; but they decided to stay. According to George, others left and nearly starved to death. George said his family always had plenty to eat.

George Sullivan, a Negro man, who worked for Aunt Ruby, told her that he had been born on her Grandfather Hankin's place. George told Aunt Ruby about the wedding of Sarah Hankins to Willie Hill. He said the wedding lasted for three days. All he did was groom horses because so many of the guests paired off and rode. **As told to Wynette Mixon in 1983
